about
In making a record of reimagined musical works, Stephen Black [Clarinet] and Paul Jones [Piano] were two musicians doing what all music fans do: comparing favourite tracks, turning each piece over for new meaning and developing a musical understanding of each other in the process.
“We’ve done a lot more work together now and so have developed certain ways of working. Because these processes have become norms, it’s spurred us on to push things a bit further and to avoid repeating ourselves” they say. “It’s fun when we don’t really know how we’re going to do something from the start, and so we try to steer it back to that explorative aspect.”
Paul explains: "Cate Le Bon suggested this track as something that could be interesting for us to re-imagine for our own version. Steve created this fantastic choir of clarinets and flutes, all multitracked, and then I added electric piano and a few passes of vibraphone. The whole thing was recorded on my Yamaha 8 track cassette recorder, and you can hear that in the way it sounds; the instruments are all quite smudged together and mushy. The reverbs and other effects were similarly done in an old school DIY fashion, using an old Zoom rack mounted processor hooked up to the 8 track. No computers involved.
I got really interested – in a geeky way - with how different tape formulas affect the sound of the recording, so I did some R&D with a load of old cassette tapes until we found ‘the one’. (A 1988 BASF Chrome Extra II for those who want to know)"
